Gold Prospecting is a Great Hobby for Everyone!

Gold prospecting as a hobby has hit an all-time high recently, you hear about it everywhere.

There are huge amount of prospecting shows on TV lately and in public forums, Facebook and more! With the price of gold going through the roof and the economy still struggling as I write this article in 2014, it seems to be the best alternative activity to find some extra income.

There can be some struggles to prospecting, it can get frustrating at times, one needs to be patience and do lots of research if they plan on hitting it big. It may seem like its takes a long time without finding anything. Keeping at it and don’t give up, take it slow and don’t expect to live off it. With precious metal exploration, there will be periods of success interspersed with frustrating dry spells.

If you’re a new hobbyist to gold exploration I highly recommend joining an organized like the GPAA, or clubs in your area, and establish Mines that are open to the public. Most Mines open to the public can give tours and show how to use a mini highbanker, pans or Gold Bankers. The good part about a these originations is getting directly to where the treasure is and they are with likeminded members.

The most common types of prospecting equipment are the sluice box, gold banker, pan, concentrator and bucket. Your average gold pan is very cheap; usually about 5 dollars, or free at a GPPA meeting, just check around, this is the cheapest prospecting equipment one can invest in. The sluice box is a little more money than the mini banker is the best investment in finding the most precious metals for your time. You can build a sluice box with little effort or material, the mini banker for its money is a good investment to purchase if you’re smart and want to have the best recovery.

Additional gold prospecting equipment consist of a shovel, pick axe, snuffer bottle, backpack, and a GPS like Garmin’s which has a APP for the smart phones you can use or purchase an individual units. GPS’s are great for locating and storing your locations to return to and keep a long of your finds. I have used my Garmin GPS to log waypoints and coordinates to some great spots, adding this to my info records to evaluate with old records to where the gold used to be. Most of the modern day explorer uses some type of location device, this will save you allot of time and energy keeping good records.

What is also a good idea is to have a proper research system and knowledge for the above resources and prospecting equipment your better prepared to get on the gold. Spending some time to do proper research before you go out to a creek, river, or hard rock mine will save you allot of time and energy. Testing is also very important for the successful prospector. Most the exploration equipment we mention will help you do proper testing if you understand its capabilities.
